pauper burials.
Investigations have revealed that most bodies were unclaimed because relatives cannot afford paying hospital bills or the cost of burying them.
In June this year, Chitungwiza Central Hospital conducted pauper burials for 21 unclaimed bodies some of which had been in the mortuary since 2008.
Chitungwiza Central Hospital public relations manager Ms Audry Tasaranarwo said burial of the bodies was carried out after the institution had exhausted all channels of trying to locate relatives of the diseased through announcements on national radio stations and newspapers.
Parirenyatwa Hospital public relations officer Mrs Jane Dadzie said the hospital had conducted some paupers’ burials. “We have just a few unclaimed bodies and at the moment we have only four that have not been claimed,” Mrs Dadzie said adding that if they failed to locate the relatives they would proceed to bury them.
