GIFFORD High School from Bulawayo qualified for the Copa Coca-Cola national soccer tornament by virtue of being the host. This would be the second time Gifford participates in the national finals under the guidance of coach Nathan Tshuma. Gifford were knocked out in the group stages of the national event in 2011, but redeemed themselves in 2013 by making it to the quarter-finals.
“We believe we learnt a lot from past tournaments, and as they say, experience is the best teacher and we believe we will do better this year.
“The last time we got to the quarter-finals and this time we’re targeting the semi-finals or the final,” said Tshuma.
However, he expressed concern about the vetting system, which he felt is unfair to tall players with big bones. He said most of them were disqualified even if they’re of the correct age.
“The vetting used doesn’t do justice to physically big players because they are deemed older even when they’re not. They should introduce a system whereby players’ information is stored from primary school level with pictures being changed annually to avoid age-cheating,” said Tshuma.
Gifford striker Anesu Maretawona said the team has been training well and are looking to conquer at the Copa Coca-Cola tournament.
“We want the trophy to stay at Gifford and believe the team can do that. We have no injuries and we’re a well oiled machine,” said Maretawona.
