HOST nation, Tanzania, have taken a lead in gold medals as Zimbabwe fight to defend the Southern Africa Regional Police Chiefs Cooperation Organisation (SARPCCO) trophy.
Gaylody Takaendesa collected gold in discus and Molly Ngwarati a gold in long jump to lead Zimbabwe’s cause.
The defending champions have collected a number of silver and bronze medals in athletics and are turning their eyes to netball and women soccer, expected to be played today, at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.
Zimbabwe face Namibia today in their first netball match.
Netball captain, Pauline Jani, told H-Metro she was confident with her defence although the team has new players.
“We are not scared of any opponent,” said Pauline. “Our defence is reliable although most of the players are new to the SARPCCO Games.
“Some were nervous to hear that Zambia’s two players, who participated in the World Cup, are here.
“Namibia are seeking revenge since we defeated her in our last SARPCCO game,” said Pauline.
