Hot on Peter’s heels

BELGIUM-based Warriors forward Knowledge Musona is now 16 goals shy from reaching Peter “Nsukuzonke” Ndlovu’s Warriors record of 38 goals.

He notched his 22nd last Saturday in a 2-1 away win against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in his 40th national team call-up.

His form saw him become the joint top scorer in the current Afcon qualification round with four goals from three matches but he missed Tuesday’s return match after he was sent off for a second bookable offence 15 minutes from time in the Kinshasa battle.

In June, Musona joined Ndlovu and Vitalis “Digital” Takawira as the only players to score hat-tricks for the Warriors in competitive matches.

Musona was on target thrice in a single match when the then Norman Mapeza and Mandla “Lulu” Mpofu-mentored Warriors side thumped visiting Liberia 3-0 in another 2019 Afcon qualifier tie.

The legendary Ndlovu, now team manager at Mamelodi Sundowns, had 100 caps for the country’s flagship team where in the process he scored three goals in the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations contest.

Musona (28), who in May completed his move from KV Oostende to Belgian giants Royal Sporting Club Anderlecht on a four-year deal, boasts of a single Afcon goal.

This is a feat that was achieved by the late Adam “Adamski” Ndlovu, Joel Luphahla (2004), Benjani Mwaruwari (2006) and most recently Kudakwashe Mahachi, Nyasha Mushekwi  and Tendai Ndoro (2017).

The calculator suggests that Musona’s scoring rate stands at one goal in every 2,5 games while Nsukuzonke scored a goal in every 2,6 Warriors games.

The last two Warriors 2019 Afcon qualifier matches will see them meet Liberia (away) and Congo- Brazzaville (home).
