Hotels have received significant bookings from delegates coming to attend the United Nations World Tourism Organisation general assembly to be held next month, the president of the Hospitality Association of Zimbabwe, Mr Tich Hwingwiri said yesterday. Zimbabwe and Zambia will co-host the world tourism showcase which runs from 24 to 29 August in Victoria Falls and Livingstone.
Mr Hwingwiri said most of the accommodation facilities had completed renovations and facelifts.
“The hoteliers have received quite significant bookings and more are still coming,” he said.
Mr Hwingwiri said most hotels and lodges were booked above 80 percent although the delegates were yet to commit themselves to paying.
He said the industry was committed to ensuring that accommodation facilities were ready before the event.
Hotelier African Sun recently said it was booked to about 90 percent for the week of the UNWTO general assembly and was certain to reach 100 percent by the time it is held.
Zimbabwe has engaged the services of a South African company to be the professional conference organiser whose role is to coordinate bookings for delegates and organise events.
The UNWTO secretariat which conducted the last inspection on the state of preparedness a fortnight ago was satisfied with the situation on the ground. — New Ziana.
