Golden Hotspurs 2-0 Madamara
GOLDEN Hotspurs FC have won the 57th edition of the Townshend and Butcher soccer tournament after beating Madamara 2-0 in the final played at Mzilikazi High School yesterday. Goals in each half by Luckmore Bhunga and former Highlanders utility player Melusi Sibanda were enough for Golden Hotspurs to win the Bulawayo Amateur Football Association (Bafa) administered competition.
Both teams won playing kits for reaching the final.
Bhunga got a trophy after being voted Player of the Tournament with Donald Mtali of Madamara getting the Goalkeeper of the Tournament accolade, while losing semi-finalists Safeguard FC were the most disciplined side.
Other individual prize winners were Rebels’ Ralph Bhebhe and Effect Mpala of Madamara who were joint top goalscorers with three goals each.
The level of competition in the amateur league impressed Zifa Bulawayo Metropolitan Province chairman Washington Chimanda.
“I’m impressed with the level of competition shown by the teams in the final stage of the tournament.
“The organisation and discipline shown by the players is marvellous and it’s this kind of display that lures sponsors,” said Chimanda.
He said plans are underway for his office to engage the Bulawayo City Council with regards to high charges that clubs from area zones have been forced to pay for ground hire.
“We’ll engage into talks with the Bulawayo City Council and try to negotiate better rental charges so that area zone teams don’t suffer. Because of the exorbitant charges, teams are now being forced to use schools instead of outside grounds at Barbourfields and other city council facilities,” he said.
