Hotspurs, Rebels gear up for final

The Townshend and Butcher Cup final soccer match pitting defending champions Golden HotSpurs and Rebels has been set for 27 September at Barbourfields Stadium outside grounds. This year’s tournament marks the 58th edition of the amateur league, therefore making it the oldest soccer competition in the country. The final match will also signify the conclusion of the tournament which has been running for the past three weeks. Sixteen teams from the Bulawayo Amateur Football Association have been participating in the tournament which began at the quarter-finals stage.

Enroute to the final, Golden HotSpurs whacked United FC 4-0, while Rebels walloped Anolle Castings FC 7-0.
The runners-up in the previous year Madamara will lay the groundwork for the final when they meet Tigers in a third place play-off.

Peter Leondios, the owner of Townshend and Butcher said they were proud to be sponsors of the Bulawayo Amateur Football Association.
“We are proud to be long time sponsors of the nation’s oldest football league. We believe in sport and we will continue to sponsor BAFA in the future,” he said.
Leondios added that they associate themselves with Bafa since they have a strong relationship which dates back to 1957.

“Our relationship with Bafa is now 58 years old. As Townshend and Butcher we feel that we have now become a part and parcel of Bafa, it is difficult to separate us from Bafa, now they are also part of us,” said Leondios.

Winners of the tournament are set to walk away with full set of kit and a prize money amounting to $175, while the runners-up will also be awarded a full set of kit together with $150.
