FORMER Zimbabwe captain Dave Houghton is not concerned about losing his world record to Australia’s Adam Voges.
Until this week, Houghton was the oldest player to score a hundred on Test debut.
Houghton was 35 years and 188 days old when he registered his first hundred on Test debut against India at Harare in 1992.
The record is now in the name of Australia’s Voges, who hammered his century against West Indies at the age of 35 years and 243 days.
“I loved to have this record for over two decades, but am happy to lose it now because it has gone to Voges,” Houghton said.
“Australia’s Adam Voges is a captain of the Middlesex team and I am a batting coach here.
“Voges played the fantastic innings and remained not out on 130 at Windsor Park, Roseau, Dominica.
“Getting to play the first Test match at the age of 35 didn’t bother me. That I was serving my country was more important.”
Houghton ultimately played 22 Tests for Zimbabwe.
The Australian team’s present eleven has three players — Voges, Shaun Marsh and Michael Clarke — who all have scored centuries on debut Tests.
However, four players, Andrew Strauss, Matt Prior, Alastair Cook and Jonathan Trott — all centurions on Test debut —appeared for England in 32 Tests together between 2009 and 2012.
This was revealed by two cricket statisticians Rajneesh Gupta (Delhi) and Gangaram Sakpal (Pune).
