In a distressing incident that highlights the ongoing political tensions in Zimbabwe, Mr Leon Shingirai Mhene, a resident of Plot 27 Village 5, Whit-Gift Farm, Odzi Commercial Area, Mutare in Manicaland province, has had his house burnt down allegedly by Zanu-PF youth.
The group was said to have been led by Moses Mujaji, a local councillor, due to Mhene’s links with the opposition party and his active role in mobilizing support for the MDC Alliance aligned with Nelson Chamisa.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident unfolded in the heat of the night, when a group of Zanu-PF youth forcefully stormed Mhene’s property, setting his house ablaze. It is believed that the attack was politically motivated, with Mhene being targeted for his affiliations and active involvement in opposition activities.
Disturbingly, Mhene’s attempts to seek justice from traditional leadership were met with resistance, as all avenues proved unyielding. Despite his desperate pleas, the traditional authorities declined to intervene on his behalf. This lack of support has left Mhene feeling helpless and genuinely concerned for his safety.
Speaking on the matter, a fellow villager expressed their dismay at the handling of Mhene’s case and the chilling effect it has had on the victim. The neighbor, who wished to remain anonymous, stated, “Leon is now at a loss on what steps to take. The refusal of local authorities to address this matter has put his life in jeopardy.”
The incident is a stark reminder of the challenges faced by those who openly support opposition parties in a politically charged environment. Zimbabwe, like many countries, values the principles of democracy, which includes respecting individual rights and freedom of expression. Acts of violence, such as the burning down of a person’s home, undermine these fundamental principles.
The community and human rights organizations are now calling on the relevant authorities to investigate this appalling act of aggression, bring the perpetrators to justice, and ensure the safety and well-being of Mr Mhene and other opposition supporters. It remains imperative that all citizens can exercise their democratic rights without fear of reprisals or intimidation.
As the nation moves forward, it is hoped that incidents like this will be treated with the seriousness they deserve, promoting a culture of tolerance, inclusivity, and respect for differing political opinions. The safety and security of every citizen, regardless of their political affiliations, should be paramount in building a prosperous and harmonious society.
