ZIMBABWE’s housing deficit remains a significant national challenge despite Government’s massive housing delivery efforts geared to ensure housing for all, Acting President Dr Kembo Mohadi has said.

He was speaking at the Great Dyke Smart City ground-breaking ceremony and World Habitat Day commemorations held in Kadoma today.

Acting President Mohadi said while Government had made remarkable progress in housing delivery, population growth, urbanisation and evolving socio-economic conditions continue to exert pressure.

The Great Dyke Smart City is being developed by Develop IT Zimbabwe (Pvt) Limited.

“Fellow Zimbabweans, the housing deficit remains a significant national challenge.

“Population growth, urbanisation, household formation, and evolving socio-economic conditions continually shape its scale.

“Our youthful population presents both a developmental responsibility and an opportunity.

“We must expand access to decent accommodation and create productive opportunities for young people and future generations,” he said.

The Acting President said the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2) recognises the critical role of private sector participation in national development.

“The NDS2 recognises the importance of private-sector investment, innovation, and effective partnerships to expand productive capacity and accelerate development.”

He said such priorities give practical expression to President Mnangagwa’s guiding philosophy of Nyika inovakwa nevene vayo/ Ilizwe lakhiwa ngabanikazi balo.

“This calls for collective responsibility, patriotism, and active participation in our country’s transformation,” he said.

The Acting President commended Develop-It Zimbabwe (Private) Limited for undertaking the mixed-use development project, saying it demonstrates the potential of private capital in addressing national needs.

“Develop-It Zimbabwe (Private) Limited has embraced this national responsibility by undertaking a substantial mixed-use development that seeks to transform previously underutilised land into a planned settlement supported by essential infrastructure and social amenities.

“This undertaking shows how private capital, technical expertise, and entrepreneurial initiative can help meet our national housing needs,” Acting President Mohadi said.

He said Government had exceeded its housing delivery target under NDS1 and has set a more ambitious target under NDS2.

“During 2021–2025, Government pursued an ambitious housing delivery programme under the National Development Strategy 1, with reported delivery exceeding one million housing units after expanding the original target.

“Building on this achievement, Government has set a further target of one million housing units under NDS2 for the period January 2026 to December 2030.

“This undertaking is integral to our determination to realise Vision 2030 and to improve our people’s living standards,” Acting President Mohadi said.
