000 property housing estate were allocated to new farmers — a development that threatens to complicate housing development.
The previous administration sold out land that belonged to another local authority — Manyame Rural District Council in Mashonaland East.
Town clerk Mr George Makunde said while council sold the land to property developers, it was “not yet council land”.
“As we speak there is nothing going on in terms of quick settlement,” he said.
Government is yet to transfer the farms to Chitungwiza. People, who bought land for housing development in the Nyatsime area, are pushing for a quick resolution of the matter. They want the council to allow them to settle there and build their houses.
Mr Makunde said council wrote to Local Government, Rural and Urban Development Minister Ignatius Chombo requesting transfer of the land. “We understand Minister Chombo has written to Lands and Resettlement Minister Herbert Murerwa to have the land transferred,” he said.
He said his council could not allow the people who bought stands there to move in without legal ownership of the land.
