For years, Zimbabwe’s online shopping and digital services landscape felt like a puzzle with missing pieces. The market was hampered by fragmented payment options and a lack of consistency, as many local websites struggled to accept bank cards. For the longest time, e-commerce was largely restricted to international transactions, leaving many local consumers, both banked and unbanked, with limited ways to pay.
This created a significant barrier for both businesses trying to sell online and customers looking for convenience. However, in recent years, that landscape has undergone a transformative shift. The maturation of Zimswitch Online has moved the country toward a unified digital payment ecosystem, effectively bridging the gap between consumers, banks and merchants.
Zimswitch CEO, Zabron Chilakalaka, explains that the platform has fundamentally reshaped the payments landscape by providing a single, secure gateway.
“This infrastructure now allows locally issued bank cards, including locally issued international cards, to make seamless payments across all banks’ registered merchants,” he said. “By fostering this level of interoperability, the platform is finally delivering the convenience and inclusivity that the local market has long required.”
The growth is evident across various sectors, including tertiary education, hotel and tourism services, events ticketing and essential bill payments. Businesses are finding that integrating one system to reach the entire banking ecosystem is far more efficient than the fragmented approaches of the past.
Michael Chauruka, head of strategy, business development and projects, highlights that this shift is as much about psychological comfort as it is about technology. He notes that customer scepticism regarding security was once a major hurdle, but the implementation of 3D Secure multi-factor authentication has turned trust into a primary driver of adoption. By requiring users to confirm transactions via a mobile OTP (One-Time Password), the platform has successfully reduced fraud risks and encouraged more people to shop online.
Crucially, this digital evolution is not exclusive to large corporations. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can now easily onboard through their banks, allowing them to integrate a professional, secure payment gateway into their own websites. The process for a consumer has been simplified to the point of being nearly instant, with purchases completed in under a minute without the need for cash, queues, or excessive paperwork.
As Zimbabwe continues its transition toward a more digital economy, Zimswitch Online is positioning itself as a vital catalyst for this growth, creating a connected, secure and accessible environment for all participants.
