The heroic Dande woman, who saved her 11-year-old daughter from the jaws of death after she was attacked by a crocodile, said she couldn’t watch her dying in front of her.
The incident happened on April 17, in the Chitsungu area of Dande, along the Manyame River, and Catherine Mambo bravely jumped into the river to fight the reptile.
Gratitude Matiko had been pulled into the water by the crocodile.
“We were at the garden around 5 pm and it was getting darker.
“So, we were washing some dishes and I told my daughter to fetch some water from the river bank.
“Then I suddenly heard a sound and I thought she was now swimming.
“But it turned out she had been attacked by a crocodile and she was calling for help.”
She added:
“Ndakabva ndamhanya kurwizi and ndakaona achinyudzwa ndakatarisa, panga pasina mvura yakawanda but it was pushing her to the deep end.
“Ndakatarisa kudaro, rakaedzakumunyudza richimuchimupindura, rakamupindura three times.”
Then, her instincts took over.
“At that moment, I became brave and jumped into the water with everything I was wearing.
“Ndirimo mumvura kudaro, rakabva ramudzosa futi pamberi pangu chaipo and mvura yacho yaisvika in my waist.
“I got hold of her right hand since iro ranga rakabata the left. We wrestled and I was pulling her to the river bank and my in-law was also helping with stones.
“I managed to get madhaka, ndikakanda pariri and my in-law akazoedza kupinda achikandawo madhaka.
“Ndakaramba ndichidhonza, ndakazonzwa kuti aregedzwa. We then helped each other to pull her outside.
“Some villagers were now coming since they heard our cries but by the time they arrived, we had managed to pull her out.
“She was bleeding from her hand, which was broken. She had also sustained a broken shoulder.”
Mambo said things could have turned out differently.
“Dai izvezvi tiri parufu rwemwana wangu nekutya.
“If I was not around, maybe tichitotaura zvimwe.”
