HOW Mine FC claimed third place in the Bulawayo Football Festival by edging Tsholotsho FC 1-0 in the four-team tournament played at Barbourfields Stadium yesterday. The tournament is part of ongoing festivities marking Highlanders’ 90th anniversary celebrations this year. Veteran Godfrey Nguwodzawo’s solitary strike was enough for new coach Kelvin Kaindu’s men to dispatch Tsholotsho’s second-string side.
The gold miners outplayed Tsholotsho in all departments, with Pascal Manhanga causing most of the damage with his pinpoint passing and sleek runs off the ball.
How Mine had earlier fallen 2-4 to eventual winners Highlanders after a penalty shootout following a 1-1 stalemate in regulation time in the semi-final. Highlanders’ enterprising youngster Brian Banda gave Bosso the lead in the fifth minute when his shot from the edge of the box flew past a diving Given Kutsanzira in goals for the gold miners.
Toto Banda capitalised on a defensive lapse by Bosso left-back Bruce Kangwa to slot in the equaliser for How Mine in the 15th minute. Tsholotsho lost their semi-final clash against PSL debutants Bulawayo City 1-3 after penalties following a goalless draw in regulation time.
Xolani Ndlovu, Zimiseleni Moyo and Leeroy Rwokuda all missed their spot kicks for Tsholotsho, while Mkhululi Moyo, Nicholas Mundandisha and Lewis Ncube converted for City.
