The gold miners, who have amassed 36 points from 16 matches, leapfrogged ZPC Hwange and Bantu Rovers who went for the weekend games as joint log leaders with 34 points. ZPC Hwange were held to a goalless draw by 10th placed Tsholotsho Pirates while Bantu Rovers lost 1-0 to Bulawayo Chiefs in Plumtree.

ZPC Hwange is a point behind How Mine with Bantu Rovers trailing the log leaders by two points.

With three teams vying for the championship, the second half of the season will be interesting.

Bantu Rovers spokesman Wilbert Sibanda said they were bracing for the second half.

“We missed Elvis Moyo, Nqobizitha Masuku and Kelvin Moyo who are with the national Under-20 team preparing for their Africa Youth Championship qualifier against Angola. The players who came in for them did a good job but unfortunately we lost.

“The championship race is still wide open and we will have to compete very hard in the second half and hopefully we will be up there at the end of the season,” Sibanda said.

Former Premiership side Railstars are also in the championship race as they are fourth on the log with 30 points from 16 games.

Njanji shared spoils with Ntabazinduna Prison as the two teams played to a 1-1 draw.

Farai Mujokoro coached New West City were the weekend’s biggest scorers as they beat Rufaro Rovers 5-0. New West City, targeting a top four finish are on position five with 28 points from 16 outings. They got their goals from former Highlanders winger Warren Dube who scored a brace with Nkosilathi “Torres” Mhlanga, Mengezi Dube and Erico Phiri also finding the target.

“I am happy with the way we have been playing and this was our biggest win of the season. We could have scored more goals but at times our strikers fluffed chances,” Mujokoro said.
