How to deal with erectile dysfunction

DEFINITION

Erectile dysfunction is the inability to get and keep an erection firm enough for sex.

It can occur sporadically, or it may be long term or even permanent.

Symptoms of ED

Trouble getting an erection.

Trouble keeping an erection.

Reduced sexual desire.

Causes of ED

Heart disease.

High blood pressure.

Diabetes.

Obesity.

Sleep disorders.

Low testosterone.

Alcoholism and other forms of substance abuse.

Age — as you get older, erections might take longer to develop and might not be as firm. Even though ED becomes more common as men age, growing old is not always going to cause ED. Some men may stay sexually functional into their 80s.

Worry about sexual performance.

Surgeries or injuries that affect the pelvic area or spinal cord.

Treatments for prostate cancer or enlarged prostate.

Certain prescription medication, for example, cancer treatments.

Peyronies disease — development of scar tissue inside the penis.

Exposure to pornography — chronic porn consumption can cause a shift in brain chemicals that may contribute to organic erectile dysfunction.

Depression, anxiety, or other mental health conditions.

Stress

Relationship problems due to stress, poor communication or other concerns.

Prevention of ED

Manage DM, HPT or other chronic health conditions.

Regular medical screening tests.

Quit smoking, limit or avoid alcohol and do not use illegal drugs.

Exercise regularly — exercise increase blood flow.

Take steps to reduce stress.

Get help for anxiety, depression or other mental health concerns.

Treatment of ED

  Oral drugs – Viagra (Sildenafil), Tadalafil, Avanafil etc. These drugs work by increasing blood flow to the penis and they should be prescribed by a medical personnel.

Testosterone therapy.

Vacuum erection device.

Surgical treatment — which includes insertion of a penile implant (penile prosthesis)

Complications of ED

Unsatisfactory sex life.

Stress or anxiety.

Embarrassment or low self esteem.

Relationship problems.

Inability to get your partner pregnant.
