How to maintain a hygienic kitchen

The kitchen can turn from wow to whoa in a matter of hours!

The busiest and most overused place of everyone’s home during this pandemic has undoubtedly been the kitchen.

From the hustle-bustle of cooking three square meals, its often the most ignored space as well when it comes to cleaning and maintaining it.

“It isn’t surprising when home-makers are complaining of cockroaches, bugs, food droplets around and dirt.

With little or no household help, maintaining the necessary kitchen hygiene has become difficult,” notes Pankaj Poddar, co-founder of Hipcouch, a Mumbai-based interior design company.

To those who find it troublesome to maintain a clean kitchen all the time, Poddar has come up with an easy eight-step plan that will take your kitchen from clean to ‘Monica-Clean’ with just a couple of easy steps. If you’re worried they may be too time-consuming or overwhelming, leave your worries to the dust! These mere instructions are simply home improvement solutions, tricks and hacks that will leave you with a clean, healthy and spotless kitchen that you’ve always dreamed of!

Cleaning

“For a high-traffic space like the kitchen that goes through a lot of wear and tear, it is important to keep the cleanliness and hygiene of your kitchen in check,” Poddar reminds us. While food and oil spills may leave a tacky stain, its important that you spray the area with all-purpose cleaners and wipe it dry.

Waste Management

Working around edible stuff can create a lot of waste (both wet and dry). It is important you have your waste management in check. The garbage can harbour alarming bacteria and offensive smells.

Empty Sinks Are the Way to Go

While a sinkful of piled up dishes may not seem like the best way to spend your weekend, one must leave the associated indifference toward it aside and tend to the dishes almost immediately. “Make sure to keep your sinks empty and clean,” advises Poddar. “That way it creates more room for rinsing off the veggies while cooking and reduces the concern of bad odour coming off used utensils,” he adds.

Right Cleaning Tools

Imagine not having your gloves or trash box in place! What a nightmare, right? Make sure you wash the napkins regularly and store them at a place that is easily accessible. Also, do not forget to dispose of an overused napkin as the odour from it can last for days. Using kitchen napkins or rags cuts down on trash and make you eco-friendly because you can just use one rag and rinse it out when required, instead of tearing off paper towels and throwing them away after one wipe.

 Spill-in Check

Another easy way to maintain your kitchen is to never let the spills sit. Although one may occasionally let go of the small spills around or might let it sit for a while, it is not an ideal situation to be in as they get sticky and stinky in no time! – GoodHomes
