Howard Webb to recruit 12 former players

Howard Webb is ready to fast track 12 former players in an ambitious refereeing scheme as officiating at the top level continues to fall short.

This season there have been several high profile errors made by referees, many of them costing teams points. Confidence in those making the decisions, both on the pitch and in the VAR hub, is diminishing and Webb is looking for ways to increase the competency and perception of officials.

The former World Cup final referee was put in charge of the PGMOL in 2022 and has sought to be more transparent with the decision making behind certain calls. His latest initiative, as reported by The Sun, will see 12 individuals who recently retired enter into a scheme that will see them become part of the refereeing body.

Webb has rejected the idea from fans and pundits that those with the whistle don’t understand the game from a playing perspective and simply apply the laws of the game. The twelve who have put their hands up will be able to shortcut the normal progression path undertaken by the PGMOL.

Webb accepts that having such figures in and around the body will aid the perception of referees currently. Incidents like the red card given to Curtis Jones for Liverpool at Tottenham divided opinion with ex-pros drawing on their playing experience to explain why they thought it was a harsh call.

The PGMOL have had to come out and issue apologies this term for refereeing blunders. Wolves have been on the receiving end of some tough calls, which began on the opening weekend against Manchester United. Gary O’Neil again felt aggrieved after their loss at Fulham on Monday night.

He confessed: “Maybe tonight has finally turned me against VAR. The impact that you are having on my reputation, and the club and people’s livelihoods is massive. We should be able to talk about the game and not decisions, but unfortunately we can’t. I think it is a really complex [issue]. I have always been for VAR but I think it is causing problems at the moment. I think VAR has cost us there.”

Mikel Arteta is another man to speak out against referees in the aftermath of Arsenal’s loss at Newcastle. Anthony Gordon’s controversial goal survived three VAR checks before the Spaniard came out fuming.

He said: “We’ve been taking it up (with the PGMOL) for months. There is too much at stake, we put in so many hours. I’m here to represent the football club and to get my team to compete at the highest level, the margins are so small, it’s a disgrace, embarrassing.” – Mirror
