DALE Howie hit a brilliant six-under-par 66 on the last day of the Golden Pilsner Harare Open Golf Championships at Chapman to win the tournament after a collapse by the overnight leader. Howie had started the final day nine shots behind leader Greg Bentley, who led the first two rounds and looked set to win the title before he terribly lost his way, as the pressure built, and wilted in the final 18 holes.

Howie hit seven seven birdies, with his only bogey of the day coming on the last hole, but by then he had all but sealed his triumph.

The tournament had a field of 42 professionals who took part in three day event and was packaged with a US$25 000 purse.

The winner walked away with US$4 500.

“Want to thank everyone for the support this week!!!” Howie tweeted.

“It was an amazing win.”

Bentley, who had led round one and two, struggled with his putting on the final round to finish on a disappointing six-over-par 78 and pocket US$3 250 for his efforts.

Tranos Muradzikwa and Nyasha Muyambo finished tied on level par after the three rounds and walked away US$2 312 richer.
Micky Hough finished on one over par after he returned a 71 in the final round.

Hough was tied with Ignatius Mketekete who did not have a good game by his high standards.

Julius Kamalizeni finished seventh while Brian Gondo and Robson Saurombe were tied on eighth place and Tongo Charamba could only finish in 10th place.

Charamba, who later drowned his sorrows with a drink at Alex Sports Club on Saturday night, felt he was undone by his poor putting.

The professional golfers are expected to travel to Hwange for the annual Hwange Open Charferly this weekend.

Meanwhile, the Nyatsimba Mutota, which was held this weekend, was hailed as a success after several players turning up for the event which was held at Warren Hills.

The chairman of the organising committee, Lovejoy Mamvura, said the event surpassed expectations.

“We are happy with the support which we received from fellow golf players as this was an event which we used to raise funds for the clubs.”
