rugby match on Friday.
The one-day event is part of efforts to support up-and-coming players and the proceeds raised during the match will be donated to two selected junior teams. One of the organisers, Kundayi Hatendi, said their thrust was to assist the less privileged in rugby with basic equipment.
“We are targeting the youths, they need to be properly equipped to deal with the nature of the sport.
“We are trying to support the already existing structures and support the rugby union’s developmental efforts.
“This is a way of giving back to the community by the Tobacco Industry. We asked companies to contribute to the cause. As an industry it’s not about how much you give but it’s about supporting a worthwhile cause,” said Hatendi.
Hatendi said two junior clubs – Mbare Juniors and a team from Chitungwiza – will benefit from the proceeds and they have already sourced some of the equipment.
“We already have some of the equipment and from there we are trying to build a sense of belonging in the youth. We will have a curtain-raiser match between Mbare juniors and Mabvuku before the main match,” said Hatendi.
Hatendi said they are hoping to make the event an annual feature depending on the response they were going to get.
“This is our first event. We are hoping to make it an annual event depending on its success and support from the stakeholders.
“This is a realisation by industry that we have to take responsibility for the communities around us.
“It’s a conscious decision that the industry is making and it is coming from the heart. We would like to make it bigger as we go on. We are still getting donations and by Friday we will know how much the equipment is worth,” said Hatendi.
Some of the equipment sourced include rugby boots, T-shirts, shorts and cones and the organisers are hoping to have raised more by Friday.
