Huawei partners Kenyan data firma

The company’s enterprise data solutions include cloud computing, networking and wireless services as well as data centre set up support.

“The partnership is part of our expansion strategy for East Africa,” said Huawei technologies chief executive Wind Li.
Although Huawei has a huge presence in Kenya’s mobile handset market, it is yet to make its mark in enterprise data solutions.

Meanwhile, Kenyans are looking forward to a further fall in mobile phone calls and internet costs due to increased competition and the entry into the market by multiple players.
Information and communications permanent secretary Bitange Ndemo says the availability of fibre optic links should further open a new frontier in pricing, given the efficiency and cost advantages associated with the technology.

He says despite pressure to sustain their profitability, no mobile service provider should stagger their call tariffs above KSh2 a minute. He says price wars pitting the service providers should further work to the advantage of the subscribers.

“They should not go beyond KSh2. The advantages would be higher if the prices are kept at minimal,” Ndemo said in Nairobi last week.
Safaricom, Orange and Airtel have in the recent past thrived on promotions and offers as they gear towards cost reduction.

Essar Telecom’s Yu introduced free on-net calls for customers, as uptake of data services in Kenya continues growing. Hopes for reduced telecommunication charges follow the commissioning of the KSh42 billion (US$500 million) 4G network, which industry players say will significantly revolutionise the telecommunications sector through cost advantages.

“We are certain it will work and this is the right time. This will be the first in the world where operators will share both passive and active components in the network and the benefits will be passed on to the consumer in form of cheaper broadband,” said Dr Ndemo.

Recently, the Communications Commission of Kenya slashed interconnecting rates to KSh1,44 (US$0,01) from KSh2,21 (US$0,02), backdated to July 1 last year. – CAJ News.
