GOSPEL sensation, Minister Michael Mahendere, has described his nomination in the Outstanding Male Musician category as both humbling and historic.
He finds himself listed alongside some of Zimbabwe’s most celebrated secular music heavyweights.
He is the only gospel musician nominated in a category that, for years, has been dominated by secular artists.
His inclusion marks a significant moment for the gospel genre, which has often been recognised in its own specialised categories but rarely at the centre of mainstream music honours.
“I am very happy and excited.
“This nomination is not just for me but for the gospel movement as a whole.
“To be recognised among such great musicians is an honour I don’t take lightly.
“It shows that gospel music can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with any other genre.”
Mahendere has been nominated alongside Freeman HKD and chart-topping superstar Jah Prayzah, making the category one of the most competitive.
Yet his presence alone has already shifted conversations around what constitutes mainstream success in Zimbabwean music.
Central to his nomination is the song “Messiah”, which emerged as one of the most dominant tracks of 2025.
Originally released as a gospel declaration, the song quickly transcended traditional gospel audiences, becoming a nationwide anthem.
Throughout the year, Messiah could be heard everywhere — from kombis navigating Harare’s busy streets to bars, social gatherings and parties.
Its catchy melody, bold production and powerful message made it a rare crossover hit, embraced by listeners, regardless of religious affiliation.
Music analysts and fans alike noted how unusual it was to hear a gospel song receiving the same level of rotation and public excitement typically reserved for secular hits.
For many, Messiah became more than just a song; it was a soundtrack to daily life, moments of celebration and reflection.
“People were looking for something uplifting, something that speaks to the soul,” he said.
“Messiah reminded people that no matter what is happening around us, there is hope and victory.”
Over the years, Minister Mahendere has steadily built a reputation as one of Zimbabwe’s most innovative gospel musicians, blending contemporary sounds with spiritual depth.
“Winning would be special, but even this nomination is already a win,” he said.
“It tells me that the message is reaching people, and that is what matters most.”
Minister Michael Mahendere’s presence in the category has already rewritten the narrative — proving that gospel music can command the same national attention and cultural impact as any genre on the Zimbabwean music scene.
