MORE than a hundred predominantly unknown players turned up for the last Caps United Football Club recruitment exercise that was held at Mpopoma High School yesterday.Caps United FC’s welfare manager George Gumbo said he was impressed with the Bulawayo turnout.“Bulawayo had a very good turnout I’m impressed with the passion that most of the young players showcased today,” said Gumbo.
He said they had managed to spot a few talented players who clearly need guidance to play professional football.“We managed to identify a number of players who have impressed the scouting team, the guys have potential and I’m sure they can be moulded to professional football players with the right guidance.”
Gumbo said the selected players will be invited to a training session under the newly appointed Caps United coach Mark Harrison who will pick some that he would want to join his squad for the 2015 Castle Lager Premier League season.
“The players we identified in all the cities we toured this week will be invited to attend a training session under the new coach on January 16 in Harare, who’ll then select those that he would want to have as part of his team for the season, ” said Gumbo.
Among the players who attended the training session were relegated side Bantu Rovers’ Benson Phiri, Thulani Gumede and Obediance Siwele and former Chicken Inn midfielder Julius Daudi. Daudi will soon earn himself the nickname “Mr Trials,” as he has this week been trying his luck at Bulawayo giants Highlanders with Bongani Mafu showing some interest in him.
Makepekepe are still without a confirmed team for 2015 after losing a number of their first team squad while about nine have since aproached the Footballer Union of Zimbabwe for assistance in getting their signing-on fees and salaries for the past season. Even their coach Harrison faces a possible lawsuit from his former employers Black Leopards for breach of contract.
