Human remains found in Nyamandlovu

The police are now appealing to members of the public who might have a relative who went missing to assist although no timeframe has been given on when the person could have died.

Provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Siphiwe Makonese confirmed the discovery of the remains of a human being by a villager who was looking for his cattle at Bells Farm under Chief Deli Mabhena.

She said the remains have since been taken to the United Bulawayo Hospitals for a post-mortem as investigations continue after which it would be established who the person was and the possible cause of death.

“We received a report about a human skull and a collarbone that were found by Mr  Francis Nyathi (50) of Stand Number 5 Bells Farm, Chief Deli in Nyamandlovu, while he was looking for his cattle in a bush at the farm on 12 May,” said Asst Insp Makonese.

She said the collarbone was found about 15 metres away from the skull.

“There were also pieces of clothes near the remains, which showed that the person was wearing a grey and blue stripped T-shirt. When Mr Nyathi saw the remains of the human body, he went and made a report to the police in Nyamandlovu,” said the police spokesperson.

“The police in Nyamandlovu then informed the Homicide Section in Bulawayo and the Criminal Investigation Department in Lupane and the remains were then taken to UBH for a post-mortem.”

Asst Insp Makonese said while investigations continued, police suspect the person might have been murdered or attacked by wild animals.

“We are suspecting that it could be murder or since our province has a lot of wild animals the person might have been killed by such beasts. However, we are still waiting for results of the post-mortem after which we could confirm the cause of death. As police we value human life and would bring to book any culprits if the results show that it was a case of murder,” she said.

“Our appeal is that members of the public who might be missing a relative whom they last saw wearing clothes as described should approach any police stations especially the Homicide Section in Bulawayo or Nyamandlovu. We would also want to urge people to avoid walking alone in the bush as that puts them in danger of being attacked by wild animals.”

Meanwhile, police are still investigating reports about a pride of four lions reportedly wreaking havoc in Nyamandlovu and  surrounding areas.

The lions have reportedly killed about eight cattle and two donkeys belonging to villagers. Officials from the Parks and Wildlife Management Authority have since shot dead one of the four lions.
