MUTARE mayor, Councillor Simon Chabuka on Wednesday distributed grocery hampers worth thousands of dollars to approximately 900 beneficiaries from different wards and organisations as part of the Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund.
Speaking on behalf of the mayor, his deputy, Councillor John Nyamhoka, said the delay in the distribution of the goodies was a result of logistical issues and the need for a conducive date for all stakeholders.
“We unfortunately rescheduled the distribution as we wanted to ensure that all shareholders were available. The beneficiaries include widows, the less-privileged and people living with disabilities, drawn across all Mutare City Council’s 19 wards,” said Councillor Nyamhoka.
Freedom to the Disabled Persons in Zimbabwe’s director, Mr Morris Mupfumwa said they were elated with the development.
“We are happy that people living with disabilities were part of the beneficiaries of the proceeds from the Mayor’s Cheer Fund. They will start the new year in high spirits,” said Mr Mupfumwa.
Quadriplegic and Paraplegic Association of Zimbabwe director, Mr Bernard Madzivire, hailed the orderly distribution of the goodies.
“We are happy that we were involved in the planning and execution of the event. This resulted in a big attendance of beneficiaries. The grocery distribution was a beautiful way to start the year, even the gatecrashers were not left out. We look forward to more impactful joint ventures,” he said.
Mega Market representative, Mr Rashid Gusto said he was elated to be part of the proceedings as it gave the company an opportunity to, not only alleviate poverty, but also to expose the community to delectable taste.
He said: “I am thankful to the mayor for the donation, and I applaud his exemplary leadership. His interaction with the business fraternity warmed my heart.”
