BEITBRIDGE town secretary and liberation war hero Dr Sipho Singo was on Saturday morning buried at his Mazunga Farm, 60km west of the border town. Mourners from across the country gathered at his homestead to bid farewell to the well-respected academic. He was honoured with a three-gun salute, with many describing him as a principled man.
Dr Singo succumbed to heart failure at the age of 56 at Polokwane General Hospital in South Africa on January 18.
Among the mourners were Chief David Mbedzi Stauze of Beitbridge West, Home Affairs Minister Kembo Mohadi, Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to Egypt Aaron Maboyi Ncube, Beitbridge Senator Tambudzani Mohadi, Beitbridge West MP Metrine Mdau, Plumtree town clerk Mr Davies Luthe and many others.
Minister Mohadi said, “We have lost one of the best brains, who had the foresight to transform Beitbridge Town into one of the best investment destinations in the country. “He was a principled man who always carried out his duties professionally and we want to assure the nation and the community of Beitbridge that we are going to continue from where he left in terms of implementing developmental projects.”
He joined the liberation struggle in 1970 and was trained in Zambia before being posted to Ethiopia and Russia.
