Hundreds get free health care in Gweru

Speaking at the official launch of the Free Health Day, Economic and Commercial counselor in the Office of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Zimbabwe, Mr Han Bing said the event will be held annually throughout the country.

He said China and Zimbabwe enjoy cordial relations which date back to the days of the liberation struggle.

“Today, the Chinese Embassy in Zimbabwe’s official launch of the Free Health Day has been marked by a clean up campaign in the City of Gweru.

This day was initiated by the 12 member Chinese medical team and Chamber of Chinese Enterprises in Zimbabwe. The event will cover all the country’s provinces throughout a period of one year commencing today (yesterday) and we are hoping to kick start the programme by giving treatment to at least 500 patients today in Gweru,” said Mr Bing.

He said China and Zimbabwe have worked and achieved results as partners in various economic sectors that include trade and investment. “China and Zimbabwe enjoy good business and cultural relations Zimbabwe always regards China as her reliable all-weather friend considering achievements that have been scored so far in the  field of trade, investment, contracting and technological cooperation,” he said.

Mr Han said investment between the two countries has also increased rapidly over the years. “The total volume of trade between two countries rose from less than $100 million in year 2000 to $ 874 million in 2011, a growth that is more than 10-fold,” he said.

The Chinese medical team which is being headed by Dr Xiao Xiangcheng comprises specialists in urology, orthopaedics, anaesthesiology and radiology.

Speaking at the same function, Midlands Provincial Governor Cde Jason Machaya thanked the Government of the Republic of China for coming up with such a noble project.
