Hunt for lions goes on

A zebra was killed yesterday as bait for the felines which have brought terror to the resort town as they are being regularly cited in the Mahombekombe area with the latest being a house where two cubs were spotted in the yard on Wednesday evening at around 7pm.

A man yesterday morning also spotted the lions but could not determine how many they were as he ran for dear life.

A source in the ongoing hunt said the lions are averse to entering the cages where baits are set near Mahombekombe primary school where they mauled Sharon Mahwere on Tuesday evening.

“A zebra has been killed to trap the lions and so far professional hunters are now part of the team with indications that they could be killed as they would be dangerous to be in contact with people,” said the source.

An attempt to catch the lions almost turned tragic on Wednesday evening at around 1800 hrs when a Parks and Wildlife Authority game ranger Partson Makombe (33) of Chiwara safari camp was accidentally shot by his colleagues as they tried to rescue him from a lion attack.

Mashonaland West police spokesperson Inspector Clemence Mabgweazara confirmed the incident adding that teams were out in the bush hunting for the feline.

Two lions emerged from the rear as the team of rangers was setting a trap near Mahombekombe primary school and pounced on Makombe. His colleagues opened fire and he was hit by two bullets on the left thigh and ankle.

He sustained moderate gunshot wounds and he was taken to Kariba district hospital where his condition is reportedly stable.

“We are on the ground urging people to go inside early to avoid encounters with the lions which have so far claimed the lives of two people and are being regularly spotted by residents in the area,” he
said.
