A 27-YEAR-OLD man from Westgate in Bulawayo assaulted his wife after she questioned him about a woman on his WhatsApp profile picture, whom she suspected to be her cousin.
Jopo Mashiri reportedly snatched the phone from his wife, Precious Zinyemba (23), and started to beat her up, questioning her on why she was going through his phone.
Mashiri appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Ms Marilyn Mutshina and was charged with domestic violence.
However, the charges were withdrawn before plea.
Mashiri had pleaded not guilty to the charges and told the court that he did not beat up his wife but he only pushed her.
“Your Worship, my wife took my phone then asked me about the pictures in the phone. I told her to stop touching my phone. I never laid a hand on her although I did push her,” he said.
Prosecuting, Mr Raymond Makaza said on 19 April at around 5:30am, Mashiri and Zinyemba were at home in Westgate when Zinyemba took her husband’s cellphone and started scrolling through profile pictures on WhatsApp.
It is reported that Zinyemba noticed a familiar female face and she asked Mashiri who the person was as she thought it was her cousin from Mutare.
Mashiri snatched the phone from Zinyemba, causing it to crack.
It is alleged that Mashiri started strangling the complainant and assaulted her with open hands on the face thrice, asking her why she was scrolling through her phone.
Zinyemba sustained a swollen face but did not seek medical attention.
