A 23-year-old woman who beat up her husband for not bringing money home, is stuck in a Victoria Falls prison with a 10-month old baby after she failed to pay a $100 fine for the assault.
Noria Lungu of Chinotimba suburb in the resort town assaulted her taxi driver husband Musekiwa Ncube, 28, after he failed to give her money to buy food for their 10-month-old child.
Lungu was convicted on her own plea of guilty to physical abuse when she appeared before Victoria Falls magistrate Sharon Rosemani on Monday.
She was fined $100 with the option of spending 10 weeks in prison if she failed to pay the fine.
Asked why she committed the crime, Lungu said: “I didn’t mean to hurt him in any way your worship. He usually makes empty promises about giving me money to maintain our child. I was just angry after he made me wait for a long time and gave me silly excuses about not having the money.”
Prosecuting, Listen Nare told the court that Lungu used an empty beer bottle to hit her husband on the head on Wednesday last week at Mkhosana Turn Off.
“On October 14 at around 11AM the complainant phoned the accused and told her to meet him at the turn off so he could give her money to buy food. She complied but when they met at the said place, the complainant hadn’t raised enough money to give her and a misunderstanding arose,” Nare said.
In a fit of rage, Lungu picked up an empty beer bottle and hit her husband.
Other taxi drivers and passers-by restrained the couple as Ncube bled from the head.
Ncube reported the matter to the police leading to his wife’s arrest.
Since Monday she has been languishing in the prison with the baby as she could not raise the fine.
