HWANGE Colliery Company has with immediate effect appointed Mr Jemester Chininga as acting managing director, chairman Mr Farai Mutamangira has said.
Mr Chininga takes over from Mr Stanford Ndlovu, the company’s finance director who has been acting managing director since the departure of Mr Fred Moyo in September last year.
“In terms of the articles, we are allowed to appoint a board member as acting managing director and Mr Chininga took the office yesterday (on Monday),” said Mr Mutamangira.
“He will hold that position until we identify a proper candidate.”
Since the departure of Mr Moyo, Hwange has been on the market searching for a substantive managing director.
But it is understood that its three choices were turned down by the Government, the largest shareholder of the country’s biggest coal mining firm.
One of the candidates that the board had recommended was former MD Dr Godfrey Dzinomwa, Mr Nicholas van Hoogstraten, one of the major shareholder said recently.
Other candidates that were dropped are Mr Terence Mukupe, a former co-chief executive of Renaissance Capital Zimbabwe, and Mr George Chigora, formerly with Ziscosteel.
Mr Chininga is a holder of Bachelor of Science Business Administration degree from International University of San Diego, California, the United States. Previously, he was the managing director for Ramotswa Steel and Iron Company, a Botswana-based subsidiary of Ziscosteel between 2000 and 2009.
He was also the managing director of other Zisco subsidiaries in Zambia and Namibia. Mr Chininga joined the public service in November 1980 and rose through the ranks to the position of deputy secretary of finance and administration in the Ministry of Industry and Commerce.
He is a former board member of Olivine Holdings and Centre for Innovation Enterprises.
He is also a former board member of the Minerals Marketing Corporation of Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe Iron and Steel Company and the Standards Association of Zimbabwe.
