Veteran athletics coach Kenny Nyape said they have been mobilising resources to make sure that Hwange which used to produce some of the best athletes reclaim their spot as the hub of athletics in Zimbabwe.
He said they have been conducting clinics and competitions in the coal mining town where there is abundant talent.
“I am keen on developing athletics in this part of the country and it will be a disservice if I take a back seat when it comes to Hwange producing good athletes. Our target is to get back to the national championships next year and we have already set that mission in motion.
“There is abundant talent here and as part of our preparations for national championships, we are having Village Games. We have been away from the national scene for three years and we want to come back with a bang,” said Nyape.
The three villages participating in the Village Games are Makwika, Madumabisa and Lwendulu.
Nyape said they were also identifying talent at schools in Hwange.
The collapse of the Chamber of Mines Games has seen athletics taking a back seat in Hwange and other mining towns.
