THE Lions Club of Wankie Lwendulu will on Saturday carry out a Diabetes Awareness Campaign at St Patrick’s Hospital in Hwange to raise awareness on the disease.
The event has been organised to run in conjunction with the Lions Club International Worldwide Week of Service for Diabetes which runs from Tuesday to Monday.
Lions Club of Wankie Zone 3D chairperson Mr Barnabas Male said the campaign was meant to raise awareness on diabetes through educating the community, develop environments that inspire and support healthy lifestyles, increase access to diabetes care, medication and diagnostic equipment, encourage prevention, fight to minimise the effects of the disease through professional counselling and increase co-ordination and support for the affected patients.
“We are working with St Patrick’s Hospital and a Bulawayo-based pharmaceutical company, Varimed (Pvt) Ltd on this programme,” said Mr Male.
He said the event will start with a Lions Stride Walk from Empumalanga Bus Stop through Bagdad Shopping Centre. The club’s diabetes coordinator, Ms Ketiwe Musendo, urged the local community to come in numbers for the event. Diabetes is a chronic condition that occurs when the body can not produce enough insulin or cannot properly use the insulin that is available.
The World Diabetes Day is commemorated internationally on 14 November. More than 422 million people are affected by the disease every year.
Meanwhile, the Lions Club of Wankie Lwendulu is also working on a programme on educating the community on albinism with churches and other support groups being roped in to support those affected. — @tobymando
