IT was a freak accident that left him with an amputated leg and 19 years later former Hwange FC coach Brian Njobvu is set to receive an artificial leg.
Nineteen years ago, on 15 September 2001, while trying to stop a fight between Hwange and Victoria Falls football fans, Njobvu’s leg was run over by the Hwange FC team bus.
He was amputated two years later and has served as club assistant coach to several coaches in the last 15 years.
His close friend and former coach Weekly Mwale told B-Metro Sport that a sponsor had pledged to source an artificial leg for Njobvu.
The US$310 artificial leg will be handed over to Njobvu in two weeks.
“We had started appealing for assistance from well wishers to raise the US$310 for the artificial leg and a sponsor, who would like to remain anonymous, said he will pay for the cost of the artificial leg in full.
“So, the fundraising initiative has stopped at the request of the sponsor,” said Mwale.
Mwale said his former protégé was in good spirits and grateful for the kind gesture.
“He has been walking with the aid of crutches after he lost his leg but he was now complaining of pain and difficulties in moving around for the last couple of months,” he said.
Njobvu is not attached to a football club and according to Mwale, the former Hwange FC defender has fallen on hard times.
“He is not working so he has no income but must still take care of his wife and children as well as buying medication. I last spoke to him a few days ago and he is in good spirits,” he added.
Njobvu last sat on the technical bench as an assistant coach at Hwange FC before he was axed by the club executive as the team was sinking deeper into the relegation zone of the Premier Soccer League.
