Fairness Moyana in Hwange
HWANGE Colliery Company Limited (HCCL) continues on its recovery path even in the face of Covid-19 following its International Standards Organisation (ISO) certification by the Standards Association of Zimbabwe (SAZ) which is evidence of its determination and resilience to improving its business ethics.
The coal mining company was awarded two systems certification, Occupational Health and Safety Systems (OHSAS) and Environmental Management Systems (EMS) by SAZ. Handing over the certification to the company during a ceremony in Hwange on Thursday last week, SAZ director-general Dr Eve Christine Gadzikwa said the company deserved the certification arguing that it had showed determination and commitment in improving safety and health as well as protection of the environment.
“Through diligent efforts and significant investment Hwange Colliery Company Limited (HCCL) has rightfully attained certification to two systems by the SAZ, this important milestone underlines the determination and commitment of management and staff in safeguarding the health and safety of staff and stakeholders and protecting the environment. Congratulations for this noble achievement, a truly commendable milestone for HCCL,” she said.
She applauded the company for its resilience and determination in desiring certification during the global pandemic arguing that such a move was commendable in enhancing its sustainability.
“During such times, Safety, Health, Environment and Quality are the last thing we can afford to sacrifice during the Covid-19 pandemic. The pandemic has presented unprecedented challenges for organisations in Zimbabwe and the world at large. HCCL has risen to the occasion and should be commended for taking a bold move by implementing systems to enhance its sustainability in the face of challenges.”
Dr Gadzikwa, however, said for the two standards to be effective there was a need for good corporate governance.
“Standards on their own are not enough but need to be complemented by good corporate governance. To be effective, SAZ expects all certified companies to observe good corporate governance because this makes business sense in terms of long-term value and sustainability of the company.”
HCCL acting managing director Dr Charles Zinyemba said achieving ISO certification was transformational and part of the company’s journey towards continuous improvement.
“Achieving ISO certification is just the beginning of our journey of continuous improvement. We will conscientiously discharge our obligations to our customers and the community, uphold the highest standards of knowledge, practices and ethics, and strive to be a role model in the coal mining community,” he said.
Dr Zinyemba said the certification would guide the entity to return to profitability.
