A Hwange man has been jailed for 10 years for damaging and interfering with electricity transmission infrastructure.

According to a statement issued by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Shelton Nyoni went to Inductorserve Logistics workshop in Hwange on June 5.

He cut and destroyed several armoured copper cables supplying electricity to the premises. A Hwange Magistrate Court heard that he damaged property, valued at US$1 200, which included one 25mm four-core cable and two 25 mm single-core cables.

“The offender was caught at around 3 am by a local resident while attempting to escape. A guard from the Inductorserve Logistics workshop assisted in his apprehension,” said the NPA statement.

Investigations led to the recovery of the cables, a pick, a pair of pliers and a jungle knife.

The cables, weighing 4.5 kilogrammes, were confirmed to be copper by an electrician.
