HWANGE has been thrown into deep mourning after the sudden death of Empumalanga Town Board’s director of housing and community services, Ananias Banda.

Banda, a respected and well liked figure in the coal mining town, died on Sunday evening at his home. He was 53 and leaves behind his widow and three children.

Empumalanga Town Board spokesperson Dumisani Nsingo confirmed the heartbreaking news and said the community had lost a pillar of service.
“It is with deep sorrow that I confirm the passing of our Director of Housing and Community Services, Mr Ananias Banda. Mr Banda passed away yesterday evening at his home after a period of illness lasting approximately two months. The exact cause of death is yet to be determined, pending postmortem results,” said Nsingo.

He described Banda as a committed public servant who served Hwange with quiet dignity.
“Mr Banda joined the Council in 2018 and served with dedication throughout his tenure,” added Nsingo.

Burial arrangements are still being finalised as consultations continue, but early indications are that he will be laid to rest in Hwange.

Residents described Banda as approachable and passionate about improving housing and community facilities. His death has left a dark cloud over Empumalanga, with many saying the town has lost a hardworking son who always put people first.
