Hwange to install solar street lights

HWANGE Local Board is set to install 100 solar street lights next month which are expected to be functional by April. The town secretary, Ndumiso Mdlalose said they hope to engage a company offering the best tender for the project. “We hope to start installation of the street lights by end of February and the target is to complete by end of April. We will start with low density suburbs which are Baobab Hill, Chibondo, Hillside, South Cliff and along the highway to town on Independence drive,” he said.

Mdlalose said after that they would move to the high density suburbs which already have tower lights.

“There are streets lights in some parts of the low density areas which haven’t been working for more than a year now because the cables were affected by the rains. Some of the street lights were affected by power cuts while others are now obsolete and need to be upgraded,” he said.

The town secretary said the solar power project was in line with the government’s thrust to improve service delivery. “We’ve budgeted about $300,000 for the project and the bulk of the revenue will come from residents,” said Mdlalose.

Council chairman Cosmas Ndlovu said the street lights will go a long way in curbing crime in the town. “ As a security measure, streets lights are a must in all our suburbs and as such the installation of the lights is one of our top priorities,” he said.
