HWANGE Football Club Veterans will today hold a meeting to elect a substantive committee to run the former players’ association.
According to interim secretary and spokesperson of the veterans Aleck “Rico” Nyoni, the meeting will be held at the Lwendulu conference room in Hwange at 10AM.
The former Chipangano midfield kingpin said all positions were up for grabs. “Those competing for the chairmanship are David Phiri and Chabuka Mwale, while Vitalis Kamocha will battle it out with Mwale for the vice-chairman’s post in the event that Mwale loses to Phiri. I’ll be vying for the secretary’s post together with Dumisani Mafikeni,” said Nyoni.
Five candidates, Amon Mukozho, Saki Tshuma, Samuel Ngwenya, Taboniswa Ncube and Francis Mwinga will be gunning for the committee member’s post.
“The purpose of our association is to try and raise funds that will assist former players in times such as bereavement or other unfortunate ills that may befall us. We noted that some of our former colleagues go through difficult times once they call it quits and don’t get employed,” said Nyoni.
The veterans were able to send two of their members to the funeral of Eddie Chitato last year despite the player having played for two other clubs after leaving Hwange.
“To us that didn’t matter as he was still our former colleague and we had to grieve with the family,” he said.
The veterans also hold fundraising matches whose proceeds go to Nyaro Mumba, who has since lost his eyesight.
Suspended Zifa Matabeleland North chairman, Dennis Chuma and Hwange FC administrator, Khumbulani Mbani have been invited to oversee the elections.
