Sydney Mubaiwa in Zaka
Villagers in Zaka North under Chief Nhema are living in fear of marauding hyenas, which have descended on the villages looking for food. The most affected areas are the mountainous Ward 1 and 2, with donkeys and goats being the main targets. Villagers are worried that the hyenas would become desperate and attack people and other livestock.
There are also fears that the hyenas may also spread other diseases like rabies.
Zaka North Ward 1 councillor Cde Lovemore Makuyana appealed to the Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Authority to help them fight wild animals.
“The prowling animals are causing sleepless nights and I am sure that they are straying from nearby mountains.
“Villagers are losing their livestock and we are worried that the animals will soon pounce on humans,” Clr Makuyana said.
Zaka North legislator Cde Robson Mavhenyengwa said he was yet to receive the report, but would address the problem.
“I will engage with the parks authorities to deal with the situation if it persists,” he said.
Problems with hyenas have also been reported in the Musvovi area of Chivi under Chief Nemauzhe where villagers lost their livestock.
