A 20-YEAR-OLD man from Cowdray Park is marvelling in the reality of his dreams to become a doctor that were almost shattered by financial constraints, thanks to Professor Mthuli Ncube whose scholarship now pays the medical student’s school fees.

The young man, Mongameli Moyo (20), who scored 17 points at Advanced Level said he was considering joining artisanal mining in some of the mining hotspots around Bulawayo had it not been for Prof Ncube’s good heartedness.

Sunday News caught up with the former Luveve High School pupil who expressed his gratitude to Professor Ncube who gave him a lifetime opportunity to achieve his dream.

Professor Mthuli Ncube

“I learnt my Advanced Level at Luveve High School. I had a challenge with school fees as I was raised by a single parent who could not afford to take me to university. I passed my A-level examinations with 17 points doing sciences and I had a dream to be a medical doctor. So, I had a challenge as I could not raise the money to go to university.

“I had an encounter with Prof Ncube who came to my aid and gave me a scholarship. So, as we speak now, I am doing my first medical year at the Midlands State University, going for my second semester. I am very grateful to him. I did not think that with the situation and the conditions that we had at home I would make it to university,” said Moyo.

Professor Ncube has also gifted Moyo a laptop and cellular phone in order to support his studies.

“Seeing that the minister is a person who is concerned with educating people, he is concerned with people’s lives so he came into my life at a very crucial point. I was even thinking of going to the mines around town because I did not have any other option. However, I am following my career which I have always dreamt of. He gave me a laptop and a new phone and I am using those gadgets. My studies are actually going well and I am very happy about that,” said Moyo.

Professor Ncube who is an academic in his own right said scholarship programmes were part of his empowerment programme in his constituency.

“We have been rolling out various empowerment projects in the constituency. We have had various skills courses and trainings and the scholarship programme is part of the broader empowerment programmes we are doing. He is a brilliant young man and I felt it would be prudent for us to sponsor him,” said Prof Ncube. — @nyeve14
