I can’t mourn Dhewa forever – Peter Moyo

UTAKATAKA Express heir apparent, Peter “Young Igwe” Moyo, says he has gathered enough strength to keep the family legacy

intact, 13 years after his father’s death.

His father, Tongai “Dhewa” Moyo, died on October 15, 2011, after his battle against cancer.He was 43.

Thirteen years later, the Young Igwe, who inherited his father’s band, reckons it is now time to celebrate Dhewa’s legacy.

“I cannot mourn him forever. In life, there comes a time when we need to celebrate our departed ones.

“His loss used to affect me until 2020 but it has dawned on me that I need to be strong and safeguard our father’s legacy,” he

said.
“I am grateful to all the people who have always rallied behind the family after we lost our father.”

To mark his father’s 13th anniversary, Peter has lined up a commemorative gala on October 26 at Sherwood Golf Club in

Harare.
Somandla Ndebele, First Farai, Tendai Dembo and his younger brother Obert Tongai Junior will grace the event.

“I have invited my good friends and those who used to hang around with my father to come and celebrate his legacy.

“My younger brother (Obert Tongai Junior) is also coming to perform at the event. We have decided to hold this year’s edition

in Harare for the sake of our fans in the capital,” he said.

He also saluted fans for embracing his talent.

“When I entered the music industry, many people wanted me to sound like my father but they realised that I could not be like

him.

“I am glad they have also been giving us strength to keep doing good music.”

His father left a rich catalogue of albums, making him one of the country’s gifted sungura musicians.

These include ‘Vise’, ‘Naku’, ‘Mano’, ‘Mudzimu Weshiri’, ‘Chirangano’, ‘Samanyemba’, ‘Chingwa’, ‘Pakanaka Dhewa’, ‘Naye’,

‘Pinda Panyanga’, ‘Muridzi Wenyaya’, ‘Toita Basa’ and his popular duet with Somandla “Mafia” Ndebele, ‘Moyo Wekurera.”

Dhewa was a talented choreographer who dominated the music landscape alongside with Alick Macheso for over a decade.

He was an option in sungura to those who wanted variety.
