ASPIRING Highlanders chairman Kenneth Mhlophe has implored club members to desist from smear campaigns against other candidates.
Highlanders members will elect the club chairman, executive secretary and committee member on February 4.
Mhlophe is running for the post of chairman against incumbent Johnfat Sibanda, Nodumo Nyathi and Eddison Dube.
In the past, elections have been toxic to the extent of members creating animosity which has caused divisions in the club.
“I am also aware that as members discuss who is the best to lead Bosso as chairman, sharp and sometimes emotional words may be exchanged, all in the interest of Bosso. However, I am urging all those that believe in the Mhlophe philosophy that they must be tolerant, never insult or demean members who do not see the way we see things, instead try and convince them why they should vote Retired Colonel Kenneth Mhlophe. Respect is critical, lingathethisi abantu (do not insult people) using my name or on my behalf, rather entice people to our side on my behalf or using my name, lokho kungcono (it’s better),” said Mhlophe.

He is against the idea of seeing a divided Bosso.
“I would rather lose with my dignity and honour still intact than win and lead a divided Highlanders because those who would have been insulted by you, who support me, may still have that anger which will make it difficult for them to rally behind any programmes we may undertake during my tenure,” said Mhlophe.
Before the election, Bosso will have their annual general meeting (AGM) on Sunday.
“As days count down towards two crucial and critical events in the club calendar, the annual general meeting and the elections, excitement and anticipation levels are rising with every minute. We are all looking forward to the AGM first, which also is an opportunity for the membership to map the way forward for the club. Equally important is the election of office bearers, who will drive the club following what members would have resolved at the AGM.
“As your candidate for the post of executive chairman, I am not averse to many divergent views about my candidature, some excited while others are, naturally, not so keen to have me as the chairman. That scenario is expected, otherwise we wouldn’t be having these elections, it’s summarised as democracy which, as Bosso family, we hold so dearly,” said Mhlophe.
Mhlophe’s previous three-year tenure was marked by resilience in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic, which saw sponsors like NetOne redirecting their support to combat the virus, leaving sports teams like Bosso to navigate through financial challenges.
Highlanders finished fifth last season for the second year running which Mhlophe has promised to end in his campaign.-@innocentskizoe
