I HAVE BEEN TO HELL AND I’M BACK: POPTAIN

Mangaliso Kabulika

ZIM dancehall chanter Poptain has revealed his tough struggles with depression in the track Nyasha Nengoni set for release at the end of this month.

In a social media post, Poptain said he felt overwhelmed by demands on his time and success, particularly after launching his own record label.

“Depression is getting the best of me. Handichina shamwari, ndangova chikwangwari.

“Nhai Ndakaresva papi,” he posted.

His manager, Kundayi Arimando, said the artist’s disappointment with the music industry’s lack of financial support for artists also contributed to his struggles.

Kundayi praised Poptain’s resilience and determination to confront his personal challenges through music, and hopes that the artist’s honesty and openness will inspire others going through similar struggles.

“He went through a rough time when he opened a record label, as every artist who joined wanted to be carried by him.

“The pressure of constantly being on demand and feeling responsible for others took a toll on his mental well-being.

“He also faced the disappointment of realising that the music industry often fails to adequately reward artists for their efforts.

“The disparity between the amount of work artists invest in perfecting their craft and the financial returns left him deflated and questioning his path.

“The forthcoming single serves as a testament to his resilience and determination to overcome personal struggles.

“Through his music, he has found the strength to confront his own demons,” said Kundayi.
