‘I haven’t forgotten’ . . . Teenage Hadebe equips the streets that raised him

WARRIORS’ defender Teenage Hadebe has launched his new foundation with a powerful message to the streets that raised him: he has not forgotten Makokoba. Through the newly formed Teenage Hadebe Foundation (THF), the FC Cincinnati star has donated brand-new playing kits to junior and social football teams in his home neighbourhood of Bulawayo, transforming his international profile into something tangible that young players can touch, wear and compete in.

The initial handover benefitted Real Stars Under-13s, the reigning Zifa Junior League champions, alongside the Makwe Social Team. THF has confirmed that further kits are already en route for other age groups within the Real Stars setup. In a move that signals a long-term vision rather than a one-off gesture, Hadebe also pledged future support for Tigers FC — another Makokoba junior side and fierce rivals of Real Stars — widening the foundation’s impact across the local sporting landscape.

“This is just the beginning. As a foundation, we are prioritising that the less privileged children in our society should have a fair share of opportunities with everyone. Hence this small gesture should motivate the young boys to have confidence and work hard towards their goals.

“We are looking forward to bring more consignment for the team in all age groups, which is already underway. And also support other teams within the community. But the foundation is looking at the bigger picture in equipping students in all the different disciplines they can excel in the future. This means the Teenage Hadebe Foundation won’t be about football only. It will go beyond football in equipping these youngsters,” he said.

For the people of Makokoba, the donation carries profound meaning. Locals have watched Hadebe’s ascent from township pitches to the Warriors shirt and onto the stage of American Major League Soccer. His success serves as living proof that a path to the top exists, provided it is met with hard work, patience, and the support of those who refuse to pull up the ladder behind them.

Coaches and community members present at the handover noted that the kits represented far more than mere equipment; they served as a vital reminder to the boys that their dreams can survive the toughest circumstances when a role model who has lived their experience returns to pull others forward.

“It’s a confidence booster to the juniors. From seeing Hadebe on TV to having him influencing their daily lives is more than an endorsement. It’s every child’s dream to have your stars supporting you,” said Jabulani Muza, a community member in attendance.

Muza added that Hadebe’s decision to give back carried significant weight because it is rooted in identity and memory rather than public relations, providing the next generation with a local hero they can actually speak to.

“Hadebe is a proud reference of someone who continues to give back to his community. After making it big he remembers his roots and also uplifting others. We are grateful for his generosity and he is a blessing to our community,” he said.
