JOHANNESBURG – Lance Klusener has told Eyewitness News (EWN) Sport that he’s looking forward to his move to Zimbabwe. The former Dolphins coach has been appointed as Zimbabwe’s new batting coach on a two-year contract that gets underway on Sunday.
Hamilton Masakadza has been fired as captain in all three formats, which sees vice-captain, Graeme Cremer take over.
Klusener says he’s excited to get onto a bigger cricketing stage.
“It’s a nice opportunity for me, coming along at the right time. It’s something I’ve wanted to get involved in for a while, some international cricket.
Their first tour that I’ll be involved with is at home to India in three ODIs and two T20s,” said Klusener.
Klusener will work alongside his former team mate Makhaya Ntini, who has been promoted from bowling coach to head coach in the interim after Dav Whatmore parted ways with the team.
He says it’s something he thought would never happen.
“I’m looking forward to hooking up with my old friend there; it’s exciting for me. It’s funny how opportunities come around. Hopefully we can form a good team and make sure while we’re in charge there is an improvement in results for Zimbabwe.”
Klusener explained what he’s looking forward to working on with the side.
“They’ve always had good players and the fight that they show. Of late, maybe we haven’t seen as much of that. It’s about making sure the opposition are always in for a tough game; it’s what I remember when I played against them.
“If I can add more value from a technical point of view as well, then that will be great.” – EWN
