AFRO-JAZZ crooner, Norman Masamba, has paid tribute to Victor Kunonga and the late music legend Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi for the influence they have had on his musical journey.

Fondly known as SaMasamba, the crooner believes that the mentorship he received from these icons has profoundly shaped his career and helped him become the artist he is today.

In an interview with Zimpapers Arts and Entertainment Hub, SaMasamba said he was groomed by some of the best minds in the industry.

“I was mentored by great minds in showbiz, and I will forever cherish all the good things they showed me,” he shared.

He reflected on his time in South Africa, acknowledging the pivotal role Tuku and Kunonga played in opening new doors for him.

“It’s rare to be given an opportunity by a fellow artist to navigate your terrain, as was the case with me. I will forever cherish this kind of love that I received over the years, and for many decades to come.”

Recently, SaMasamba launched his EP titled “Kuti Todo” and believes that relocating back home, after his years in South Africa, was a wise decision.

“Life in South Africa was enjoyable, but there comes a time when you want to be home with your kith and kin.

“In my case, I believe I made the right decision by coming home, and I will forever cherish that decision,” he said.

He was optimistic about his fan base.

I am quite sure that fans will embrace me, although I still need to improve my network.”

His only worry was that most venue owners are skeptical about hosting jazz artists.

“Being a jazz musician is a bit tricky at home, especially when you are not playing cover versions like some of us.

“In my case, I believe in my own compositions, but some venue owners prefer hosting cover bands.

“This is the biggest challenge we are facing in our industry.

“I will continue holding shows and promoting my own music that I think will be embraced by many.

“I am grateful to some of the venue owners, like Gava Restaurant, who have continued to support me over the years.

“It feels good being appreciated and loved on home turf.” He also revealed that his main focus in the first half of the year was collaborations.

“I believe in the power of synergies, and the best way I am going to execute this plan is through major collaborations.

“So far, I have collaborated with Mbeu and Selmor Mtukudzi, with more coming in the course of the year.”

SaMasamba’s journey is a testament to the power of mentorship and the importance of returning to one’s roots.

With the guidance of legendary figures and a strong desire to connect with his audience, he is poised to make a significant impact in the music industry. As he embraces new challenges, his story serves as an inspiration to aspiring artists everywhere, reminding them to acknowledge their mentors while remaining true to their origins.

In his case, Tuku and Kunonga remain the idols who shaped his career.HC
