Ice & Fire Pamuzinda will host a birthday party for Witness Matema, one of the pioneering DJs to stage old skool gigs at the hangout back in the day when other clubs were busy playing new music. Matema who is more popularly known on radio as “Chuman”, turns 42 this weekend and he chose to go back to his roots where he started the old skool movement together with the likes of Kudzi Marudza and others.

“When we took over Ice & Fire Pamuzinda I promised fans that my focus was to bring back the good old days. This is exactly what we are doing and beginning this Saturday we are going to host Chuman’s birthday party starting from 2pm until late,” Josh Hozheri said of Ice & Fire.

According to Ronald “D-Train” Chiwanza, Chuman’s friend and close confidante, the party starts at Ice & Fire Pamuzinda in the afternoon where resident DJ Mukanya will warm the decks.

“Then later in the evening the party moves to ZimCafe Restaurant for a night to remember.
“There will be a number of musicians and DJs who are expect to thrill the crowd,” D-Train said.

So popular were old skool parties at Ice & Fire Pamuzinda then known as Pamuzinda Highway Xscape and run by Victor “Godfather” Chiraga, that it was always packed with revellers.

Chuman is the last son of the legendary music producer Crispen Matema and started his music business in the 1990s having inherited a huge collection of vinyls from his father’s collection. With the majority of records being blues, soul and jazz, Chuman developed a keen interest in the genres and when he joined ZBC in 1995, his forte was jazz and soul. At ZBC’s Power FM, Chuman worked alongside seasoned presenters in the likes of Peter Johns, Kudzi, George Munetsi, Admire Taderera, Kelvin Sifelani and others.

Over the years , Chuman gained experience and became close to Kudzi and in 2006 they formed Huggiez Entertainment, comprising DJs who specialised in old skool music.

Later on, D-Train, Dj Flabba joined and they turned Red Fox Chase hotel into an oasis of old skool between 2006 and 2007. Huggiez Entertainment is also credited for conceptualising the old skool themed parties which have became popular over the years. Since then, the DJs have moved from one joint to the other entertaining old skool music lovers.
