Bulawayo-based Afro-pop artiste Isaac Mwanza, popularly known as Ice Mwanza, has reminisced about his impactful duet with the late South African musician, Zahara on the song Phendula.
The collaborative track, blending Shona and Xhosa languages, was released nine years ago, leaving a lasting imprint on both artistes.

The decision to collaborate with Zahara stemmed from Ice Mwanza’s deep admiration for her music and personality.
“I decided to do a duet with Zahara because I was so in love with her music and personality. When I listened to the original version of Phendula, I just found myself humming in between Zahara’s lines like there was something that needed to be added.
“That’s how the duet idea struck me, and I started writing the Shona lyrics.”
The experience of collaborating with someone from a different culture and background proved enlightening for Ice Mwanza.
“Working with someone from a different culture and background was an enlightening experience. I got to learn new things and got new exposures,” he noted.
Describing Zahara as a wonderful person and a talented musician, Ice Mwanza highlighted her down-to-earth nature despite her immense success.
“With the Zahara collaboration, I started getting more recognition both locally and abroad. Zahara was a very big brand, and working with her would not go unnoticed. Many doors were opened, and great more exposure,” Ice Mwanza shared. He expressed deep sadness at Zahara’s passing and emphasised her willingness to help others. Describing her as a sister and friend, Ice Mwanza conveyed his pain and extended heartfelt condolences.
“She will be greatly missed. May her soul rest in eternal peace,” he said. – @TashaMutsiba
