At least 20 schools in Manicaland Province have received computers under a programme in which Government is working with partners to improve e-learning in previously marginalised institutions.
The computers were donated by Plan International and the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education.
Plan International provincial head Mr Stanley Dawa said the NGO would continue boosting the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) capacity of schools in the province.
“We are assisting schools in their computerisation and connectivity projects in almost all districts in Manicaland,” he said. “Government has invested heavily in ICTs in schools with the view that technology has a profound impact on economics and society, changing the way we work, communicate, engage in social activities and enjoy ourselves.”
Mr Dawa was speaking at the third edition of the Provincial Merit Awards held recently at Mutare Boys High School.
“Technology also drives innovation in many different spheres of life,” he said. “The testimonies of improved standards as a result of improved instructions in computerised and internet-connected schools are evident.”
In a bid to promote the new curriculum, the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education and Unicef have also donated text- books to schools.
“Spurred by the realisation, the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education and Unicef have jointly started to procure and distribute batches of textbooks to provinces to mitigate the acute scarcity of the updated curriculum textbooks,” said Mr Dawa.
He called upon other organisations to partner the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education and assist schools in Manicaland province purchase new curriculum textbooks.
“I am pleased to inform you that schools in the country in general and Manicaland province in particular have constructed state-of -the-art sports facilities to enhance the implementation of the dictates of the updated curriculum,” he said.
